The 30-Second Pitch
I’m a writer, editor and marketer with a background in art and photography (self-taught). You could say I was destined for a career in communications and publishing. I’ve worked on magazines, newsletters, books, websites, blogs, e-mail, direct mail, annual reports, brochures, videos, CD-ROMs — you name it. I like variety. And applying my skills to support good causes, like my Italy 2008 calendar for Doctors Without Borders. Or volunteering with Charity Focus. I believe in lifelong learning and have countless semesters left: Spanish, Italian, chess, cooking, scuba diving, martial arts, public speaking, etc. Please check back for info about my graduation party.
The Self-Indulgent Director’s Cut
I’ve worked in communications, publishing and marketing for more than 12 years. After a stint as editor of The Communitarian (the student newspaper at Delaware County Community College), I transferred to Boston University and worked at Nine to Five magazine in London during a semester abroad. I received my B.S. in journalism with high honors in 1996.
My first job out of college was designing the premier issue of Saul Bellow’s literary magazine, News from the Republic of Letters. I also worked part-time in publishing sales for RIA Group, a division of Thomson based in Boston. Later I joined Quinlan Publishing Group as editor and new media director, where I developed several websites and online marketing campaigns and wrote the biweekly Grants for Cities & Towns newsletter.
In 1999, I joined The Industry Standard in San Francisco. As an editor for the growing online division, TheStandard.com, I helped build new content and commerce sections such as special reports, and managed production for the e-newsletters and online magazine sections. When the dot-com bust eroded the company, I ramped up Hunter Boyle Creative Communications and worked with clients on web design, online marketing (SEO/SEM), usability, content development and analytics.
Returning to the east coast, I signed on with Progressive Business Publications, where I served as editor of the What’s Working in Sales Management and Internet Marketing Report newsletters, managing editor of a CD-ROM sales training tool, and product manager for newsletters for nonprofit, marketing and finance executives. I also launched the company’s first blog (for Internet Marketing Report), wrote biweekly sales and marketing e-newsletters and copy for numerous marketing efforts.
I joined Steege/Thomson Communications as an account executive in 2006. Applying my writing and marketing skills to nonprofit clients, I’ve written annual reports, case statements, print brochures, communications plans, bylined articles and speeches. I also managed a variety of online marketing efforts, including: AdWords campaigns, organic search engine optimization, link building, integrated campaigns, microsites, e-mail blasts, analytics, reporting and Web 2.0 initiatives. Clients included the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, ECRI Institute, University of Pennsylvania, Annie E. Casey Foundation and Philadelphia Safe & Sound.
Outside the office, I enjoy photography, travel, volunteering and lifelong learning. I’m a graduate of Greater Philadelphia Cares’ Social Change Leaders program, a member of Toastmasters and Philadelphia’s Young Nonprofit Leaders, and a volunteer with the World Affairs Council.
